cover ALL those servicemembers and veterans touched by war with Wartime Quilts called Quilts of Valor. This foundation is not about politics. It’s about people.
In November of 2003, Catherine Roberts founded the Quilts of Valor Foundation. She had retired from doing active clinical midwifery and in late 2003, started QOVF as a result of her older son, Nat’s, upcoming deployment to Iraq as a gunner for his Humvee. She had this vision of a postdeployed warrior struggling with his war demons at 2 in the morning. She saw him sitting on the side of his bed wrapped in a quilt. That quilt not only comforted, but warded off his war demons. Thus QOVF was founded.
Catherine says, “All our combat warriors merit our healing and comforting Quilts of Valor. This means from any conflict. That translates into many, many more QOVs to make in the years to come.”
To date the QOVFbhas donated 45,437 quilts to men and women in military service. For more information on the Q of V Foun dation go to www.qovf.org. H elp us honor those who serve our country this year. They are our stars!

Quilts to Honor God
A Religious Quilt Display by Mary Davis
MARy DAVIS wAS RAISED IN wAyNESBORO, GA. Her parents were Christians, and were faithful to teach her about Jesus, faithful to read the Bible, and to pray daily.
After graduating from high school, Mary worked for her parents breaking colts and showing horses until she met Warren Davis and a year later, in 1980, they were married. They live on the Crow Creek Ranch headquarters of the CS Cattle Co. of Cimarron, NM, where she works along side her husband. The have been blessed with two wonderful children; Walter, born in 1984, and Sara (19 months younger), born in 1985.
Mary began quilting shortly after the birth of her son. After she had made enough quilts for the beds, she was inspired to tithe her quilt time and talents by making quilts that would honor God. About this time, she viewed a quilt made by Dawn E. Amos of the famous painting of Jesus praying at the rock. Since then, she has made nine religious theme quilts depicting events in the life of Christ. The majority of them have been inspired by famous religious art.
Mary says, “Because I have always felt that I belong to God, I have no greater delight than to honor my Lord and Savior by doing my best to quilt for Him. I hope you can see my love and passion for the Lord, and I hope you love Jesus, too.”
View this amazing quilt display in the exhibit area of Hall 5!
Kaffe Club Quilts
FOUR yEARS AGO A CLASS STARTED AT SwEET
Lavender Quilt shop in Roy, Utah, using Kaffe Fassett Fabrics. That class continued meeting once a month on the second Friday and Saturday, making quilts with this particular fabric line. In 2010, the group embarked on an epic journey, to make a replica of one of the quilts in the book, “Museum Quilts,” quilts inspired by the Victoria and Albert Museum. Each quilter picked her own color scheme and combined fabrics, but stayed true to the antique quilt shown in the book. The class finished in October 2011 with 15 awesome quilts for all to enjoy. The quilt shown is by the class’ teacher, Kaye Evans, who chose to work in a neutral color palette. The group will be starting another Kaffe Club in 2012 and new members are welcome. For info contact Kaye Evans, (801) 4790550, quiltndog@q.com.

Special Quilts of Valor Exhibit
yOU wON’T wANT TO MISS THIS INSPIRING
and patriot quilt display created by one of countries finest. In memoriam of Mr. Al Lind of Quincy, Washington, who was a WWII veteran and a former prisoner of war.
In just under four years Al created and donated over 400 quilts to Quilts of Valor to honor and comfort service members returning from duty overseas who were touched by war. Al Lind was lovingly referred to as a “QOV Poster Boy” and more. But this veteran told it like it was... Mr. Lind, who quilted for other vets, heartily admonished other vets to “get off their duffs” and quilt! Mr. Lind was bit by the quilting bug late in life at the age of 89. He was a true testament that it’s never too late to give back to the troops.
See video feed at HMQS 2012 of Al Lind’s piecing methods and his call to all veterans to give their support to the Quilts of Valor Foundation. Catch his enthusiasm for this worthy quilting project. The Quilts of Valor website is www.qovf.org.

PAM HAS BEEN COLLECTING VINTAGE QUILT
tops since she started quilting in1970. She just loves the older fabrics and loves finishing quilt tops whether by hand or machine. In her collection she has tried to keep the quilting in the traditional style of that era. She uses her quilting talents and makes no changes or resets the top unless it is in really poor condition. Pam says, “I feel that every quilt deserves to be finished, and it is my goal to complete all the ones I’ve collected.”
Her favorite quilts are Log Cabins, Dresden Plates and Grandmother’s Flower Garden. She has found these tops everywhere she travels; in antique shops, on Ebay etc. Pam has a few appliqué quilts in her collection, but these are very rare to find and in good condition. She teaches a class called, “Blending the Old with the New,” and it is one of her favorites. In this class she discusses how to finish these tops, fixing any problems before quilting and cleaning, along with a slide show of over 50 quilts. Check out all of Pam’s classes on the class schedule. Be sure and stop by this special quilt display area and see Pam’s fabulous quilts! Thank you to Gammill Quilting Systems for helping us showcase such a talented Gammill quilting artist.

owned their own fabric shops or currently work in one. The Quilt Set includes an appliqué group, which creates beautiful masterpieces. The picture here shows the group donating a quilt to this year’s LDS Hospital Foundation Auction that will be held at the Little America hotel in November. Almost all the members of the Quilt Set group participated in crafting this donation quilt by piecing, appliqué, embroidery, quilting, binding or label making. It truly represents the quality of work the group produces. Quilt Set quilts have been featured many times in the calendar produced to commemorate the Auction Show. The members also create magnificent quilts each year for the Brigham City Museum’s annual quilt show; the Brigham City Heritage Days quilt show, and the Utah Quilt Fest. We know you will enjoy this special exhibit!

Group Special Exhibit
HMQS IS PLEASED TO SHOwCASE 35 GORGEOUS
quilts in the 2012 special exhibit from the Quilt Set group. Quilt Set is a group of 52 quilters from northern Utah communities around Brigham City, started 25 years ago when a few friends decided to attend quilting classes at Mormon Handicraft in Salt Lake. For several months they commuted weekly to the classes until they felt prepared to start quilting on their own. Then they began meeting in homes, later moving to the new local quilt shop, Village Dry Goods. After a few years, the new Brigham City fire station offered out their large meeting room to community groups, and the quilting group had a new home.
The group has a great diversity of skills. Some members are experts at the traditional, allhandwork style of quilting, and some are very proficient on a longarm quilting machine. Several of the members have
